Ending state funding of recycling wouldn't mean recycling would have to end

Gov. Scott Walker's top aide says the governor's proposal to remove the state mandate that communities provide recycling programs doesn't mean recycling will stop in Wisconsin.

Gov. Scott Walker's top aide says the governor's proposal to remove the state mandate that communities provide recycling programs doesn't mean recycling will stop in Wisconsin.

Department of Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch (hipsh) defended the governor's plan during a budget committee hearing Tuesday. (3/29) He said recycling has now become a way of life and where it is profitable and communities will continue to support it. Huebsch says "I think most communities will provide some sort of recycling means and will either make that a priority within their (budget) or require a charge. But there are other instances where in fact recycling can be profitable for businesses and doesn't require more tax dollars."

Huebsch 's comments came in response to a question from Marinette Republican John Nygren who opposes cutting state funds to help local communities pay for recycling. Nygren and several other Republicans say they'll join Democrats in pushing to keep recycling funds in the budget.
