Two months after losing an election by one vote, Tylor Elm was sworn in to serve as the 6th District city councilor.
Elm will finish the first year of term won by Graham Garfield, who stepped down after being charged in connection with a domestic incident. A special election next April will decide the remainder of the two-year term.
The Superior businessman and Garfield’s ex-fiancee, Kara Schmidt, who served four years in student governance and two years as a youth member of the Douglas County Board were vying for the opportunity to serve.
In a rare packed boardroom in the Government Center, area residents stepped up one-by-one to pitch the virtues of the candidates under consideration to to serve for the next 10 months.
More than 20 area residents - not all from the 6th District - voiced their opinion, most favoring Elm for the appointment to the Council.

Then it was the Council’s turn to consider the candidates.
In a 7-2 vote, Elm garnered the appointment and was sworn in.
