Drama students from both Northwestern and Superior high schools returned from state theater competition Nov. 21-23 with awards.

The NHS team’s one-act, “You Can’t Take It With You,” advanced through three rounds of preliminary contests to state competition at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The judges were extremely impressed by the professionalism of the production, according to coaches. The Tiger team earned the highest award possible, Critic’s Choice, as well as an Outstanding Ensemble Award. Performers Ariel Rutten, Lily Cain and Josh Olson each earned an Outstanding Acting Award.

The Northwestern High School drama team has advanced to state competition the past seven years in a row. Members of Northwestern High School's one-act cast and crew included Allisandra Anderson, Loreena Trump, Emma Walman, Maija Korpi, Natalie Sauer, Alexis Six, Sadie Doty, Shelby Tenney, Patricia Hanson, Jessica Schnepper, Charloette Kovaleski, Lilly Morgan, Hannah Nielsen, Kylie Burhans, Ella Cain, Olivia Pangrac, Isabella Magerl, Ariel Rutten, Lauren Crozier, Erin Germano, Sami Keller, Marissa Soyring, Lily Cain, Jade Dillard, Josh Olson, Bailey Radig, Jared Crozier, Cody Paulson, Gilbert Torvinen, Clay Armstrong, Nathaniel Fechtelkotter, Garrett Hill, Jonson Dillard and James Kovaleski. Coaches are Michael Goodlet and Pat Luostari.

The SHS one-act team performed “Freak” at the theater festival Saturday, Nov. 23, earning awards for the crew, the whole ensemble and an All-State plaque. Set in a circus-like “freak show,” the play explored the subject of suicide with an overall theme of hope.
