Often people complain about the condition of Wisconsin Point.

Broken glass, half-burned cans, dirty diapers and a plethora of other types of garbage often lay strewn across the grounds of our remote jewel.

Over the years, the city has tried a number of measures to address the problems. However, trash cans on the point proved to be dumping grounds, those that weren't stolen or set ablaze by some malicious little fiend.

The city has tried curfews, but they rely on the honor system so some problems persist.

Over the years, literally hundreds of volunteers -- a few at a time -- have made commitments large and small to clean the beach and the adjacent woods, only to have their good deeds thwarted by the few careless slobs who spoil it for everybody.

It's no doubt frustrating for the many who use the beach to enjoy the lake that gives us our name.

Superior is lucky to have such a jewel right out its back door -- a three-mile-plus stretch of pristine beach available to the public.

The solution is really quite simple.

It means taking responsibility for yourself.

It doesn't take genius to figure out what it means to pack out what you bring in. Grab a trash bag when you're packing up your food and drink for a day on the beach. If you forget, throw your empties back in the cooler, box or whatever you got them to the beach with, then throw them in the trunk and dispose of them properly when you get home.

It really isn't that hard to preserve the beach and the surrounding lake that gives us our name.
