The golf season is getting an early start this year in the Northland, thanks to the warm and virtually snow-free winter.

Both the Poplar Golf Course and Iron River Golf Course are already open for the season, and the Nemadji Golf Course is slated to open this week.

Nemadji Golf Pro Mark Carlson said, weather allowing, the Superior golf course will have nine holes open by Thursday afternoon and 36 holes by the weekend. The driving range at Nemadji Golf Course is currently open.

If everything goes as planned, Carlson said this year's opening date would be the earliest ever.

"The course is in great shape for this early, due to very little ice this winter," Carlson said.

On the opening day of the 2012 season at Poplar Golf Course, Mike Daniels of Spooner scored his lifetime first hole-in-one. Temperatures at Poplar soared to near 80 degrees for a perfect mid-March opener.

Daniels used a 7-iron on the 150-yard sixth hole, and his shot bounced once on the green and rolled into the cup. Witnesses to the ace were Seth and Traci Fonger of Superior, who watched the shot from the seventh tee box.
