Eagles take second in Hurley

The Solon Springs High School volleyball team took second place in the eight-team Hurley Tournament this weekend.

The Eagles defeated both Mercer and Hurley by a score of 2-1 and beat Wakefield, South Shore, Bessemer and Ironwood 2-0.

In the championship game, Solon Springs fell to Camulet in the first game, 25-10. The Eagles put up a good fight in the second game of the match and kept the game close. Camulet still managed to pull off the 27-25 win, however, to take the match and the title.

Salann Gilbert led the Eagles in kills with 81 and also had 19 aces and seven set assists. Rachel Hanley also tallied a large number of kills for Solon Springs with 44, while adding 11 service aces as well. Chanda Deming, meanwhile, led the team in set assists with 107 and also had nine aces and six kills.

Rachel Vessely had five kills, two set assists and six aces for the Eagles, and Amber Johnson added nine kills, two set assists and three aces. Leslie Zamzow finished the day with five kills and 14 aces, Alex Sickler had three kills and three set assists, and Ailien Bowker contributed four digs.

The Eagles will host Bayfield at 6 p.m. Thursday. The match will also mark Parents' Night for the Solon Springs volleyball team.
