Duluth police are asking for the public’s help in determining how a severely wounded dog, dropped off anonymously at a local veterinarian last week, received those injuries.
Police received a call from Waters Edge Animal Hospital at about 8:20 p.m. Jan. 31 that a yellow and white female pit bull mix was dropped off with several severe injuries. The dog was transported to Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Service for treatment, and the next day underwent surgery at another local veterinary office, police said.
According to police, the dog initially was dropped off by a woman in her 20s with a short blonde ponytail, driving a small, dark-colored four-door passenger car. She told the animal hospital that the dog was found on U.S. Highway 53 by the Miller Hill Mall and that it had been hit by a car.
Authorities said the dog’s injuries were not consistent with being hit by a vehicle - but were consistent with being in a fight with another animal, most likely another dog. Police said it also appears someone may have tried to slit the dog’s throat in an attempt to kill it.
