DULUTH, Minn. -- A man died following a fire in an apartment on the 13th floor of the Tri Towers Apartments in downtown Duluth on Saturday.

The Duluth Fire Department reported that crews were called to the fire in the building at 222 N. Second Ave. East at 4:44 p.m. On entering the apartment, firefighters found an unresponsive adult male and brought him to the hallway. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Further information on his identity was not available Saturday night.

The building’s sprinkler system knocked down the fire, and crews extinguished it. Damage is estimated at in excess of $12,000, and the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office.

Twenty firefighters from the downtown, Lincoln Park and Spirit Valley stations responded to the call.

It’s the second fatal fire in the Tri Towers building in recent years; a 56-year-old man who lived there died of injuries suffered in a January 2011 fire reportedly caused by an unattended cigarette.
