Scammers posing as officials from the Social Security Administration have been targeting local seniors over the telephone and local law enforcement agencies asked residents to be on the alert.
The Law Enforcement Center has received numerous complaints from residents about suspicious calls they’ve received. The caller states they are with the Social Security Administration and requests that money be wired to them “or else,” according to a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The calls seem to be targeting the elderly.
Social Security Administration employees will never threaten a person for information or promise benefits in exchange for information. They may call people in some situations, but will never threaten them, suspend their Social Security number or demand an immediate payment. In those cases, the call is fraudulent. Just hang up.
Anyone who suspects they've been contacted by such a scammer should call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
