The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has approved an air quality permit to Cutler-Magner Corp. for its Superior plant expansion, State Sen. Bob Jauch, D-Poplar, announced today.
CLM Corp., a subsidiary of Cutler Magner, plans to invest about $36 million to expand its Superior lime plant. The investment will add a fifth kiln to the operation, which produces lime products used in paper production, power plant pollution control, municipal and industrial water and sewage treatment, industrial and residential water treatment, road stabilization, steel production and ore processing.
"CLM is to be applauded for their commitment to the community, and the DNR should be similarly commended for their cooperation," Jauch said in a morning news release. "This is another example of state government engaging on important issues properly -- ensuring that our environmental responsibilities are met but also making practical decisions so that business can expand and grow."
In July, the DNR and CLM came to an agreement on a draft permit for the expansion project, at which time DNR staff made the preliminary determination that the company would be able to adequately meet all pertinent environmental standards.
On Aug. 14, the DNR ended a 30-day public comment period with a public hearing in Superior. Jauch submitted testimony supporting final approval of the permit. DNR staff made their final determination Friday.
