Dalbec powers Spartans past Trojans

The Superior High School boys hockey team powered past the Duluth Central Trojans 7-1 Thursday night at Wessman Arena.

Senior Pat Dalbec did most of the damage for the Spartans finishing with three goals and three assists to help his team improve to 9-3 on the season.

Superior also got goals from Dan Kolenda, Kellen McCoshen, Andrew Bronson and Taylor Leuthner and three assists from Mitch Kontny.

Superior stormed out to a 4-0 lead after the first period.

Pat Dalbec scored a pair of power-play goals and assisted Kellen McCoshen's goal. Dan Kolenda also scored on Kyle Walkowiak's first assist of the season.

Dalbec's first goal came 2:31 into the game when he took a long pass from Mitch Kontny and put the puck over the shoulder of Central goaltender Matt Erickson.

Kolenda's goal came on a wrister from the left circle with help from Walkowiak.

McCoshen's goal was a one-timer after Kontny and Dalbec forced a turnover.

Dalbec's second goal also came on the power play when he poked home the rebound after a shot by Taylor Leuthner.

The Spartans added two more goals in the second period for a 6-0 lead.

Dalbec completed his hat trick with a pass from Dan Kolenda on a power play at 2:08. Tyler Plunkett also assisted on Dalbec's 14th goal.

Andrew Bronson's first varsity goal came at 6:01 when he poked home the puck after a nifty passing display by Dalbec and Kontny.

Central spoiled Tony Ledin's shutout bid with Ryker Holm's power-play goal 19 seconds into the third period.

Leuthner completed the scoring with 7:05 remaining with assists from Plunkett and Dalbec.

Ledin finished with 10 saves to pick up his first varsity win of the season. Matt Erickson and Bret Gitar combined to stop 40 shots for Central.

Superior hosts Hudson at 2 p.m. Saturday.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV won 7-1. Justin Cannon scored twice and Joe Miller, John Rochon, Kyle Wilander, Blake Johnson and Brandon Burd scored once each. Burd and Taylor Olson also had two assists apiece and Andrew Dalbec, Rochon and Cody Spencer had one each. Scott Crawford was the winning goaltender with seven saves. ...
