SCHOFIELD, Wis. -- The Superior High School football came up short once again against D.C. Everest as the Evergreens defeated the Spartans 15-13 Friday night before a Schofield crowd of around 3,000.

Superior has now lost to DCE four times in the last three seasons with the last three games being decided by just seven points.

Superior had a chance at the lead with less than a minute remaining, but David Zastrow's attempt at a 34-yard field-goal attempt was wide left, giving the ball back to the Evergreens.

DCE then ran out the clock to improve to 1-1 on the season.

After trailing 15-7 at halftime, Superior got within 15-13 when Zach Colvin ran around the right end for a touchdown after taking a pitch from quarterback Kellen McCoshen. The Spartans attempted to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but a pass in the end zone fell incomplete.

The Spartans found themselves in business once again seconds later when Spencer Koskie forced a DCE fumble and Colvin recovered near midfield.

The momentum didn't last long as three plays later Superior fumbled the ball back to the Evergreens.

The Spartans punted the ball away to the DCE 17, then on the Evergreens' first play from scrimmage Superior's Zach Erickson intercepted the ball, giving the Spartans the ball at the 20-yard line.

Superior's trouble hanging on to the ball continued as the Spartans fumbled the ball away at the 10.

The Spartans forced a Evergreen punt on the first possession of the fourth quarter, taking over deep in their own territory.

Superior also had to kick the ball away, but DCE fumbled the punt and Superior recovered at the Everest 35.

Faced with a fourth-and-1, Chad Murray's second-effort run picked up a first down on Everest's 15.

Two plays later Superior fumbled a pitch and DCE recovered at its own 23-yard line with less than six minutes remaining.

A quarterback sack put Everest into a fourth-down situation inside its own 10 and Colvin returned the ensuing punt to the DCE 37.

A pass interference penalty gave Superior a first down at the 21-yard line with 2:20 remaining.

A McCoshen to Murray pass got the Spartans to the 16-yard line, but the drive ended there with the missed field goal.

Everest took a 3-0 lead on Matt Hanson's 38-yard field goal.

Superior took a 7-3 lead when Dan Quade and McCoshen connected on a 70-yard touchdown reception.

Mike Owens gave Everest a 9-7 lead when an interception led to his 11-yard touchdown run.

The Evergreen's second TD was a 31-yard pass from Sam Joswiak to Jeremy King with 3:59 left in the second quarter, giving DCE a 15-7 lead.

McCoshen connected on 8-of-19 passes for 183 yards.
