One of the Twin Ports' oldest waterfront businesses soon will be sold. Cutler-Magner Co., a supplier of salt and lime products, has signed a letter of agreement authorizing the sale of a controlling interest in its business to Graymont Western US Inc.

Cutler-Magner employs a total of more than 70 people at its salt facility in Duluth and lime plant in Superior. The privately-owned company incorporated in 1880, making it one of the longest-lived companies in the region.

Graymont is the third-largest lime producer in North America.

Details of the pending sale were not made public, but Graymont President and CEO Bill Dodge issued a statement saying: "We look forward to welcoming the employees of Cutler-Magner to the Graymont family. This purchase is in keeping with our growth strategy, building on our core strengths in the lime industry. We felt there was a good match with Cutler-Magner.

"We are both privately owned businesses with strong family ownership histories and a demonstrated commitment to customers, the safety of our employees, communities and our natural environment."
