PERHAM, Minn. -- A child reported missing near Perham at about 1 p.m. Friday, was found safe in a cornfield near the intersection of Highway 108 and County Highway 49, with the assistance of a helicopter, after a one-hour search.

The child had been with his father while he was working in the field, according to an Otter Tail County Sheriff’s report.

Larson Helicopters of Perham, a crop spraying company, was flying 30 to 40 feet over the rows of waist-high corn, when the child was spotted, said Michael Larson, pilot of the helicopter.

“I didn’t see the little guy,” Larson said, giving credit to Perham Police Chief Jason Hoaby, who was in the helicopter. “He was all sprawled out sleeping. Once he woke up, he started running.”

Larson speculated the child, upon abruptly waking up, may have been scared by the noise of the aircraft and the wind created by the rotary blades.

“I’m just glad he was found,” Larson said, perhaps echoing a sentiment shared by many who helped in the search at the start of a long holiday weekend.
