Superior man indicted on drug, gun charges

Brian Kainu

A Superior man was indicted Wednesday in federal court on drug and gun charges, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release.

Brian Kainu, 37, faces two counts of distributing methamphetamine, one count of possessing 50 grams or more of meth with intent to distribute and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The indictment was returned in Madison by a grand jury in the U.S. District Court’s Western District of Wisconsin. It alleges that Kainu possessed and distributed meth in March and April of this year and that he possessed a .22-caliber revolver in April.

If convicted, Kainu faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison. The possession count carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison, while each distribution count carries a maximum of 20 years and the firearm possession count carries a maximum of 10 years.

The indictment is the result of an investigation by the Superior Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Duluth Police Department, the Northwest Area Crime Unit and the Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.
