City crews are making emergency repairs to Tower Avenue after two sections of the road heaved as a result of Thursday's heat.

Crews have already removed one section of concrete on the southbound lane across from the fairgrounds, and work was underway before noon today to remove another section of concrete that buckled just south of North 41st Street.

Superior Mayor Dave Ross said he was pleased with public works quick action to make the repairs.

The concrete heaved six to eight inches above its normal plane, according to public works crews working on the repairs. They say the phenomenon isn't entirely uncommon and they've made about six to eight similar repairs to Tower Avenue over the last 10 years because the concrete heats up and expands, resulting in the road buckling.

Drivers are cautioned to go slow through the area. Work was just getting underway to remove the section south of North 41st Street late this morning. While traffic is currently being diverted away from the worse of the upheaval, a significant bump remains.

The goal is to have the repairs complete by the Fourth of July weekend but that depends on the weather.
