Rural trash haulers will get a break in tipping fees, courtesy of a contract with Western Lake Superior Sanitary District.

Superior's city council approved an ordinance change Tuesday that will cut the cost of dumping. The move comes after the city successfully negotiated a five-year agreement with WLSSD to take about 120 tons of trash each year from Duluth. The contract will help reduce the cost taxpayers pick up for operating the landfill.

With competition from private landfills, Public Works Director Jeff Vito said the move will help the municipal landfill stay competitive.

Under the new ordinance, Vito will determine the cost for handling special waste such as ash, sludge, grit, asbestos-containing materials and other environmentally sensitive waste. Formerly, the council set the price for managing those special waste materials.

The council cut the tipping fee by $7 per ton. Haulers, with the exception of WLSSD, will pay $35 per ton.
