Fifth-graders from Lake Superior Elementary helped city officials ceremonially break ground Wednesday on a new animal shelter near Bear Creek Park in Superior, paving the way for construction to begin this month.

The shelter, which will be operated by the Humane Society of Douglas County, will serve all of Douglas County. “I probably thought about and envisioned this day every day for the last six years," said former City Councilor Mick MacKenzie, who spent his entire career as a councilor planning and advocating for the new shelter.

"It was always my opinion that a facility like this was desperately needed, what the community wanted and what our stray, lost and abandoned animals deserved.”

Mayor Bruce Hagen said they'll be back to celebrate the grand opening, and celebrating the demolition of the 1970s-era dog pound on Hill Avenue next summer.
