A citation for trespass helped locate a hunter lost and injured in the Bibon swamp area in Grandview, according to Lt. Dan Clark of the Bayfield County Sheriff's Department.

Around 8 p.m. Tuesday night, the sheriff's department received a broken 911 call from 65-year-old Dennis Smith of Whitewater. Smith, using a cell phone, reported he was lost and injured near Taylor Lane.

Deputies were able to locate Smith by pinpointing his gunfire, Clark wrote in a prepared statement. He added Sgt. Paul Paulson of the sheriff's department had issued Smith a citation for trespass earlier in the day, which gave deputies a general idea where Smith may be.

Smith was located about one-half mile from the road in a swampy area with about two feet of standing water. He had injured his knee. He was able to walk with assistance from one of the deputies until another deputy and members of Grandview Fire, Mason Ambulance and Mason Fire Department arrived to carry Smith the remainder of the way.

Smith was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland with a knee injury and possible hypothermia.
