A seventh grade student from Cathedral School in Superior will represent the region at the State Spelling Bee in March.
Elizabeth Kolanczyk took first place at the CESA 12 Regional Spelling Bee, held in Ashland Feb. 3. She moves on to state competition in Madison next month. The regional runner-up, fourth grader Leo Schue from the Ashland School District, will also make the trip to Madison.
A total of 32 students in grades four through eight participated - two from each of the 16 schools in the region. All 32 were first- or second-place finishers in their local competitions.
Superior School District students Vincent Halloran and Gabi Kappas finished third and fourth, respectively. Ryan Campbell, the other Cathedral School participant, made it to the second round -- the final 16. Other Douglas County participants included Samantha DeRosia and Brayden Bartelt from the Maple School District, Katelyn Hensel and Alexandria Martin from the Northwood School District and Austin Xoltak and Logan Hatfield from the Solon Springs School District.
