A fire alarm at the Board of Trade Building closed the southbound lane of Tower Avenue at Belknap Street for about two hours Wednesday afternoon.

A smoke detector on the basement or first floor triggered the alarm, which sent employees scurrying outside.

The Superior police and fire departments responded to the alarm and closed off the street while they investigated.

There was a light smoky haze in the basement of the building, said Battalion Chief Mike Kolanczyk, who responded to the fire. But the "puff of smoke" went away, he said.

Firefighters spent an hour and 20 minutes searching the area.

"We could not find a source," Kolanczyk said.

The southbound lane of Tower Avenue was shut down because the fire trucks positioned in front of the building were creating a traffic hazard, he said.

The building has been evacuated in the past because dust had triggered the sensors. It usually didn't take the fire department long to determine the cause of those disturbances said Art Zehm, an employee in the building.

Employees saw the alarm as an interesting break during their afternoon workday, he said.
