The Douglas County Board on Thursday night approve three ATV runs on county highways, including a route that leads to a bar on County Highway P that has drawn concern from people who live in the area.
Other routes approved include a 1.2 mile stretch of County Highway E from Sam Anderson Road to County Highway K and a two mile stretch of County Highway S between Hazel Prairie to South Sandmon roads, which provides a more direct route from the northern and southern parts of Highland. The alternative route took 25 miles, which prompted town officials to seek the shorter route.
"When I was county board chairman, I had long discussion with people along Highway P regarding ATVs, at that time, that were operating illegally," said Supervisor Doug Finn. "They were concerned about what was going to happen ... people still have concerns of safety, noise and so on."
Residents of the area expressed their concerns before the 0.34-mile stretch run from Middle River Road to Gravel Pit Road was approved earlier this month by the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Each of the new routes must be posted for ATV use before they are available for use.
