It's time to change directions as work on the Blatnik Bridge continues.

Wednesday, the bridge closes to Duluth-bound traffic for about four weeks. Superior-bound travel will be permitted in one lane at the center span; two lanes of travel are allowed on the remainder of the bridge.

The center span area must be closed to meet the restricted weight limits for the repair work taking place on the bridge. This single-lane area will cause traffic backups. Motorists may wish to use the Bong Bridge as an alternate route to Superior.

Once this traffic switch is in place, motorists traveling to Duluth from Superior will be required to take a marked detour and use the Bong Bridge.

Motorists are advised that traffic is expected to be slow on I-35 in downtown Duluth for most of the day Wednesday as crews remove signs that are no longer needed and set up the signs needed for the traffic switch. There will be many temporary lane closures throughout the day and MnDOT suggests allowing extra time for travel through this area.

Southbound Garfield Avenue is closed at Nelson Street (near the Goodwill store) and will remain closed until about September 10.

All businesses in the Port Terminal area are accessible by using Helberg Drive. Signs mark the detour route.

The Garfield Avenue closure is needed to remove and replace the concrete pavement on Garfield Avenue. Northbound Garfield Avenue traffic coming from the Port Terminal is not affected by this closure and motorists can travel north out of the port on Garfield Avenue.

This work is being done as part of the I-535 Blatnik Bridge repair project.
