Birch faces 21 counts embezzling

MADISON - A Superior woman was indicted in federal court Wednesday for allegedly embezzling $14,413 while she was a treasurer of a labor union local.

MADISON - A Superior woman was indicted in federal court Wednesday for allegedly embezzling $14,413 while she was a treasurer of a labor union local.

Shari Birch, 39, was charged with 21 counts of embezzling from a labor union, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1760-A, which Represents members employed at St. Francis Home in the Park, a skilled nursing facility in Superior.

The indictment states:

On 11 occasions between May 2007 and October 2008, Birch deposited members' dues checks into her own bank account. On seven instances between October 2007 and July 2008, Birch took $1,891 by not depositing the entire amount of dues checks but instead, obtained cash from some of the deposits.

Also, twice in 2009, she transferred a total of $333 from the local's account to pay her phone bill, and in June 2009, issued a check payable to herself from the local's account.

Birch faces maximum penalties of five years in prison on each conviction.

The Department of Labor and the Superior Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter M. Jarosz, who was assigned the case, wasn't available for comment late Thursday afternoon.
