The Superior Business Improvement District and Superior Public Art Creating Community Environments are seeking artists for the "Back Door Project" to be completed by September.
The goal is to create partnerships between the artists and business owners to beautify alternate business entrances for an eight-block stretch of Tower Avenue, between Belknap and North Eighth streets. These alternative entrances will be the only entrances accessible during the time that Tower Avenue is under reconstruction beginning in the Spring of 2013.
Funding for seven to eight doors has been secured through the BID and the Wisconsin Arts Board. Stipends are $2,000 per completion of each back door. This includes the artist fee, negotiation with and sketches for the business owner, materials to complete the design, site preparation around the door and fabrication and installation of the design. Artists can submit and be selected for more than one door.
Applications are now available. Approval of applications runs until July 15 so that approved proposals will have time to complete by Sept. 15. There will be a public reception to introduce the artists and unveil the completed back doors later in September.
