MARINETTE -- Superior's 12-year-old Cal Ripken All-Star baseball team won the 2007 state championship with a 4-3 win in seven innings Sunday over Sturgeon Bay.

Superior advanced to Sunday's championship game with a 3-0 record after wins over Bay Port, 10-8; Sturgeon Bay, 6-5 in seven innings; and Spring Green, 1-0.

Superior opened the title game with one run in the first inning. Nik Mattson and Trent Olson began with back-to-back singles, with Mattson later scoring on a two-out single by Grant Rindal.

Sturgeon Bay tied things up in its half of the first, as its lead-off batter walked, moved to second on an error and then scored on a wild pitch.

Superior added another run in the third to reclaim the lead. Olson lined a single to left and Brady Uotinen singled sharply to center with one out. Rindal then doubled to right center, scoring Olson on the play for a 2-1 Superior lead.

Superior made it 3-1 in the third as Spencer Urban opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout before scoring on a single to center by Olson.

But Sturgeon Bay tied things up in the bottom of the fourth. Geisemorne led off the inning with a solo home run to center. VanderValden hit a two-out single to left and scored on a double off the bat of Felhufer.

The game was all tied up after regulation, and Superior wasted little time scoring the winning run.

Severson opened the seventh with a walk. Uotinen then put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Severson to second. With two outs, Jordan Hughes became the hero for Superior as he laced a sharp line drive to left, scoring Severson for the winning run.

Severson and Rindal shared duties on the mound for Superior. Severson pitched the first four innings, allowing seven hits while striking out five. Only one of the three runs Severson game up was earned. Rindal was the winning pitcher, working the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one batter.

Superior now advances to the Ohio Valley Regional Cal Ripken Tournament to be played Thursday through Tuesday, July 24 in Logansport, Ind.

Superior's opening round game will be 4:30 p.m. Friday against either Southern Indiana or Benton Harbor.

Remaining members of the Superior squad are Ryan Myhre, Dane Sislo, Aaron Johnson and Steven Riley. The team is coached by Mike Severson, Andy Sislo and Greg Rindal.
