The Superior High School baseball team rebounded from its first loss of the season, 4-3 to Duluth East on Monday, with an 8-2 win Tuesday evening at Hermantown.

The Spartans, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Lake Superior Conference, got a complete-game effort from Cory Wilander, who improved to 2-0 after allowing five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Only one run was earned.

"One big factor in the game was that we were able to retire their lead-off batter each inning," SHS coach Don Dembroski said. "The odds of scoring greatly increase when you put that lead-off man on. Arch (SHS catcher Matt Archambault) called a good game, Cory threw strikes and our defense made that first play each inning."

Superior scored three runs in the first and third innings and single runs in the fifth and seventh frames.

Both of the Hawks runs came in the third frame.

Superior had eight hits. Leading the way was senior Zach Sitek, who was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Dan Manion added a double, single and two RBIs and Mike Swanson and Brady Arneson had one hit each.

Andy Ross and Arneson also scored two runs apiece.

"We also took advantage of a couple of their miscues," Dembroski said. "Sitek and Manion came up with key two-out RBI hits in the first inning to give us the lead and the momentum."

Justin Baker had three hits for the Hawks, including a double.
