BASEBALL: Spartans sweep Rice Lake

The Superior High School baseball team improved to 3-0 with a pair of wins Saturday at Rice Lake. The Spartans won the opening game 9-4 then came from behind to complete the sweep with a 21-14 victory in game two.

The Spartans put their unblemished record on the line at 4:30 p.m. Monday when they host the Duluth East Greyhounds at Morrie Arnovich Field.

In the opening game Saturday, Superior had nine hits and scored two runs in the first and third innings, four in the second and one in the fourth.

Rice Lake had three hits and scored single runs in the third and fifth innings and two in the seventh.

Mike Swanson picked up the win, allowing two hits with five walks and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. He also hit two batters and before Eric Orr took over and gave up a hit with three strikeouts and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Craig Torgerson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, Swanson and Dan Manion each added two hits and an RBI and Brent Engstrom and Jake Bratek each had a hit.

"On the plus side we played error free baseball and came up with four big two-out hits with runners on," SHS coach Don Dembroski said. "On the down side, though, our pitchers combined to walk seven batters and hit three. You usually don't get away with putting that many runners on for free, we were lucky in that sense."

Superior overcame a 13-6 deficit by scoring eight runs in the fifth inning en route to the 21-14 victory in the second game.

Zach Sitek picked up the win in relief duty for the Spartans, giving up just one walk, no hits and one unearned run in the final four innings. The senior also struck out four batters and walked three.

"Zach came in shut their bats down when we really needed it and gave us a chance to come back," Dembroski said.

Rice Lake built its lead in the first three innings thanks to 13 hits, three walks and two SHS errors.

"As a team we showed some mental toughness as we were able to put the first part of the game behind us," Dembroski said.

Superior had 12 hits and took advantage of 10 walks and six errors during the rally.

On offense the Spartans were lead by Brady Arneson, who was 3-for-3 with seven RBIs. He hit a three-run homer in the first, drew a bases-loaded walk in the second, had an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth.

Chris Blake added three hits and run, Sitek had two doubles, scored twice and knocked in three others and Engstrom, Torgerson, Swanson and Ross each had one hit.

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV baseball team improved to 2-1 with two wins Saturday, 16-6 and 15-10 over Rice Lake's JV. Dan Tracy got the win in the opener, striking out six and walking one in five innings. Jake Magdzas pitched one perfect inning in relief and at the plate, and at the Spartans were led by Lee Nagorski, who had three hits and scored four runs and Tracy and Justin Andrews , who had two hits each. ... Mike Higgins got the win in the second game, going five innings striking out four and walking three. Justin Andrews pitched two innings for the save. The Spartans had 17 hits and again were led by Nagorski's four hits. Kyle Johnson and Jake O'Neill added three hits apiece, including back to back triples in the third inning. Kyle Homich also pitched in with two hits.
