BASEBALL: Spartans down East for 5th straight win

The Superior High School baseball team won its fifth straight game with an 11-6 win over the Duluth East Greyhounds Tuesday evening at Duluth Central.

The Spartans (5-1) rode the arm of Dylan Ramage, who improved to 2-0 on the season. The junior allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings. He also struck out three batters and walked three others.

Superior also got key hits from Kellen McCoshen, who hit a pair of two-run doubles; Taylor Olson, who hit an RBI double; and Ramage who had two hits, including a two-run single.

The Spartans also got a pinch-hit triple from Nick Sitek, singles from Nolan Holcombe and Marty Manion and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt by John Edwards.

Brody Olson led East by going 4-for-4 with an RBI, and Zach Farmer was 2-for-4, including a two-run home run.

Matt Johnson, Max Medlin and Aaron Grossman also singled from the Greyhounds (4-2).

After loading the bases and failing to score in the first inning, Superior scored three runs in the top of the second, with one run coming on Olson's double off the left-field fence and the other two on McCoshen's first double.

East made it 3-2 in bottom of the second on Farmer's home run.

Superior got those two runs back in the third when Zach Magdzas, who walked, scored on Edwards' squeeze, and Grant Rindal, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch.

It went to 7-2 in the fourth when McCoshen, who reached on an error, and Ramage, who singled, scored on Rindal's misplayed fly ball to right field.

Two errors, a walk and a single helped East get within 7-4 in the sixth inning.

Superior responded with a four-run seventh for a 11-4 lead.

The big hits were McCoshen's two-run double off the fence in right-center and Ramage's two-run single up the middle.

East scored two runs and loaded the bases in the seventh before Rindal, who started the inning in place of Ramage, struck out a batter looking to end the game.

The Spartans are at Cloquet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior's doubleheader Saturday at Menomonie was rained out and will be made up at 4 p.m. Monday. ... The SHS JV won 4-2. Jordan McDonald was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts. He also had a two-run single. Dane Sislo also doubled in a run and Jordan Hughes singled twice and drove in a run.
