The Superior High School baseball team held on for a 10-6 victory over the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers Thursday at Morrie Arnovich Field.

The Spartans scored once in the first inning and eight more times in the third for a commanding 9-0 lead. Marshall made things interesting with four runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth.

The win improves Superior to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Lake Superior Conference. Marshall falls to 3-4 overall.

Brent Engstrom singled to lead off the first for the Spartans and scored on Zach Sitek's ground out.

Two big hits in Superior's third inning were two-run singles by Sitek and Dan Manion.

Nick Rich walked and scored on Brady Arneson's single in the sixth inning.

The Spartans also got two hits from Mike Swanson, and one from Cory Wilander.

Arneson was the winning pitcher, working the first five innings. Andy Ross finished up with two scoreless innings.

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartans play three games next week: Monday at Duluth Denfeld, at home Tuesday against Proctor and a doubleheader Thursday at Grand Rapids. ... Justin Andrews was the winning pitcher and Kyle Wilander pitched a scoreless inning in relief. At the plate, the Spartans were led by Eric Berger's two hits and three RBIs. Mike Higgins added a two-run double while Kellen McCoshen, Kyle Homich and Jason Picard added run-scoring singles.
