Arne I. Raivala, 97, Town of Tripp, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, in the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn.
He was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Finland to Samuel and Helen Raivala.
Arne was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, sailed the Great Lakes, dairy farmed for many years and was also employed by the Department of Natural Resources until his retirement. He was a member and organizer of the National Farmers Organization (NFO), served on the town board for many years and also was a fire warden.
Arne enjoyed gardening, berry picking and his favorite pastime was going to auctions, which resulted in numerous garage sales and peddling.
He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.
Arne is survived by three sons, Wesley (Lenore) Raivala, Brule, Melvin (Rachel) Raivala, Iron River, and Howard (Bev Igo) Raivala, Iron River; one daughter, Norma (Myron) Olson, Brule; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Aileen Dreesbach, Iron River; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen; two grandsons, Todd and Grant Raivala; his parents; infant daughter; two brothers, Samuel and William, and three sisters, Mary, Tuovi and Toini.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Northern Lights and Dr. David Klee for their care of Arne.
There will be a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with Pastor H. Duane Aslyn officiating.
Following the services in Superior, there will be a gathering at the Tripp Town Hall, where a luncheon will be served.
