SPOONER (AP) -- A 72-year-old man is dead in northwestern Wisconsin after a shootout with police.
The Washburn County sheriff's department says two Spooner police responded early Saturday to a report of an older man peering into vehicles in an apartment complex parking lot.
One of the officers went up to a man matching a description of the suspect sitting in a gray minivan. But the department says the man got out and pointed a rifle at the officer.
Shots were exchanged, leaving Phillip Metzig dead. Metzig lived in a nearby apartment.
The sheriff's department is investigating along with the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation.
