Area athletes earn numerous medals at state tournament

MADISON -- More than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes, including Superior area Special Olympics athletes, participated in the 2006 Special Olympics Wisconsin Fall Sports Tournament on Dec. 2 in the Milwaukee area.

MADISON -- More than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes, including Superior area Special Olympics athletes, participated in the 2006 Special Olympics Wisconsin Fall Sports Tournament on Dec. 2 in the Milwaukee area.

Games took place all day Saturday, with volleyball at Center Court Sports Complex and bowling at AMF Bowlero and AMF Waukesha Lanes.

Athletes qualified for the fall sports tournament state games based on their performance at the local, regional or district tournaments.

Steve Depta and Jessica A. Koski both finished first in the singles bowling event, and John Linde and Mark T. Lanswick finished second. In the singles bowling ramp event, Wanda Meinke and Amber Wheatley had second-place finishes.

Special Olympics Wisconsin holds five state tournaments per year and provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for nearly 10,000 individuals with cognitive disabilities.
