Michelle Cheney, a junior college transfer from Rainy River Community College, has verbally committed to join the University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball team for the 2007-08 season.

The St. Stephen, Minn. native was named a first-team NJCAA All-American as a sophomore at Rainy River after averaging 19 points and 16 rebounds a game. She also shot over 49 percent from the field. She was twice named first-team All-Northern Division, first-team All-Minnesota Community College Conference and first-team All-NJCAA Region XIII. She also earned the team defensive award and was named team MVP.

Cheney was a member of the Dean's List all four semesters and finished with a 3.63 GPA at Rainy River.

Cheney scored 460 points during her final two seasons at Sartell High School as she led the Sabres to a third place finish in the state tournament. She was also named to the all-state tournament team.

"I chose to finish my academic career at UWS because of the criminal justice program. I think that UWS will successfully help me reach my goal of becoming a police officer," Cheney said. "I also enjoy the fact that there are so many excellent people attending and teaching at the college; I feel very comfortable walking onto the campus and facilities."
