Building contractors can begin getting their licenses for less in Superior.
The Superior City Council approved a proposal that allows contractors to save $50 on the cost of registering with the city between now and Dec. 31. The council also approved increasing the regular renewal rate to $100, making it the same price as licensing the first time.
For those who register early, they will save money, and contractors that renew after Jan. 1, it will cost more, said Building Inspector Peter Kruit.
The goal behind the price reduction before the first of the year is to encourage contractors to renew their registration with the city before the busy construction season.
According to Chief Building Inspector Dan Curran, it's typical for contractors to apply at the same time they need to pull building permits when the construction season begins. In Superior, contractors cannot get building permits without registering with the city and providing proof of bonding and insurance at a time when the building inspection department is getting busy.

Kruit said contractors currently registered with the city will receive a letter notifying them of the new incentive -- letters will go out this week now that the council approved the change.
