Two people were killed and another was airlifted to a Duluth hospital after a head-on collision near Hayward on Wednesday.
The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office said a 36-year-old Milwaukee woman was driving east on state Highway 77/27 when her 2016 Honda CR-V crossed the center line and struck a 2004 Toyota Camry driven by Debra Cox, 56, of Hayward.
Authorities said two male passengers in the rear of the CR-V were killed, while the driver and a female passenger were taken by ambulance to Hayward Area Memorial Hospital and later flown to Duluth for further treatment. Identities were not released, pending notification of family.
Cox also was taken to the Hayward hospital with unspecified injuries.
The crash occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. near the intersection at County Highway T in the Town of Lenroot, north of Hayward. It remained under investigation by the Sawyer County sheriff and coroner's offices, along with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
