MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- An eighth-grader from Menomonee Falls has won the Badger State Spelling Bee, and she now gets to represent Wisconsin at a national spelling bee in May.

Heloise Cheruvalath took the title Saturday in Madison. Her winning word was "mellifluous," which means "sweetly flowing, smooth or honeyed."

A Wisconsin State Journal report ( http://bit.ly/xyLjBA ) says she got her chance after Verona sixth-grader Aisha Khan misspelled "catalineta."

Cheruvalath and Khan battled through five final rounds.

Cheruvalath correctly spelled "decile," 'opotherapy," 'dirigible" and "cryophilic."

Khan stayed alive by correctly spelling "neuroticism," 'procacious" and "cantankerous." But she stumbled on "catalineta," a type of angelfish.

Cheruvalath will now represent Wisconsin at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held in Washington, D.C., in late May.
