The winners of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association's 2019-20 Better Newspaper Contest were announced via a virtual awards ceremony Friday, Feb. 19, and the Superior Telegram was honored with several awards.
In the weekly newspapers division, the Superior Telegram took home the following awards:
- Maria Lockwood, first place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, reporting on local education.
- Maria Lockwood, first place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, reporting on local government.
- Maria Lockwood, first place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, enterprise/interpretive reporting for "Backyard chickens boom in the Northland."
Chris Winge and Josie Gerszek, first place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, best newspaper promotion.
Gary Androsky, first place among all weeklies, best use of humor in advertising.
Jed Carlson, second place among all weeklies, photo gallery for "Windy Monday in Superior."
Jed Carlson and Maria Lockwood, second place among all weeklies, all-around newspaper photography.
- Jed Carlson, Maria Lockwood, Shelley Nelson and Jen Zettel-Vandenhouten, second place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, coronavirus coverage.
- Scott Blatchford, John Badger, Craig Maki and Megan Keller, second place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, best multiple advertiser spread.
- Telegram staff, third place among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, general excellence.
- Alexis Dietz, Kim Quinones and the creative team, third place among all weeklies, best real estate ad.
- Ken Olson, honorable mention among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, sports feature story for "Myer enjoys 'Superior' career at UMD."
- Scott Blatchford and Sally Shepherd, honorable mention among weeklies with circulation of 4,000 or more, best newspaper promotion.
