The Superior Federation of Labor announced its endorsement of candidates running for mayor and the Superior City Council following a forum Wednesday, Feb. 27.

The candidates running for office were asked a series of questions and had the opportunity to talk about their views.

After discussing the views of each of the candidates, federation president Bryce Harp said the following endorsements were made:

• Jenny Van Sickle, 2nd District;

• Laura Gapske, 4th District;

• Matt Osterlund, 8th District.

The federation also endorsed Mayor Jim Paine, who is running unopposed.

Van Sickle, a one-term councilor, is facing a challenge from longtime Parks and Recreation Commissioner Tom Wondolkowski for the seat she's held for one term.

Gapske, a member of the Superior School Board, is challenging three-term incumbent Jack Sweeney, and Osterlund is challenging one-term incumbent Craig Sutherland.

"Local labor vitally needs your support for these candidates in the spring election to help create local jobs, support working families, promote a culture of inclusivity and equality, and create a better community for all the residents of our city," Harp said.

The federation is also encouraging people to vote for Lisa Neubauer, chief judge of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Harp said. Neubauer is endorsed by the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO and is running against appellant court Judge Brian Hagedorn for the seat held by Justice Shirley Abrahamson since 1976.

Spring elections are April 2.
