Douglas County held its first American Cancer Society Relay for Life in 1994. Over the past 33 years, the annual 24-hour event has raised well over $1 million.

Teams hold fundraisers throughout the year and turn in the money at the event, which is held rain or shine.

This year, the format and location of Relay for Life has changed. It will be held July 19 at the Billings Park Civic Center, 3908 N. 18th St., Superior. The relay begins at 3 p.m. for children's and family games, and closes at 11 p.m. A dinner for cancer survivors begins at 5 p.m.

The Team Leadership Committee is holding an informational kickoff meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first floor boardroom of Essentia Health Clinic-St. Mary's Hospital, 3500 Tower Ave.

Former and new teams and participants are encouraged to attend. Informational packets, schedules, tools for fundraising and many other items will be given out. Coffee, punch, water, fruit and dessert items are served.
