A 3-year-old boy found unresponsive in a septic tank on Sunday night in Duluth Township has died.

Mick Johnston of Two Harbors died late Monday night at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported.

The exact cause of death was not yet known, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday, but it is believed to be from complications related to the incident.

Johnston was pulled from the tank by authorities and taken by air ambulance to Duluth, where he had been reported in critical condition earlier Monday.

The sheriff's office had previously said in a news release that the incident was determined to be "accidental in nature."

Authorities urged parents to keep children away from access locations to septic tanks, and to inspect tanks to ensure that entry points are properly secured.
