Washburn County makes arrest in suspected homicide


The Washburn County Sheriff's Department took a man into custody Thursday on charges of first-degree intentional homicide.

According to a news release issued by the department, deputies responded to a call about a deceased individual at N 1745 County Highway M in Long Lake around 4:40 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies were able to determine the person was likely a victim of homicide. They further developed information that indicated the suspect may have remained on the property.

A containment perimeter was established by deputies with the help of Wisconsin State Patrol, which provided troopers and air support.

Once the scene was contained a coordinated operation plan was developed utilizing the Washburn County Special Response Team, the Barron County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team and the Douglas County Sheriff's Armored Response Vehicle.

Prior to the tactical approach to the residence, the Birchwood Fire Department and Lakeview Medical Center EMT's were placed on standby should fire or medical services become necessary.

At about 8:24 p.m., a tactical approach was made at the residence and communications were exchanged between Washburn County's Special Response Team members and the suspect. Shortly thereafter, the suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Washburn County Jail.

James L. Pinter, 52, was booked into the Washburn County Jail on homicide charges based on information and evidence indicating he caused the death of his brother, John E. Pinter, 54.

James Pinter appeared in Washburn County Circuit Court today, where bail was denied.

A competency proceeding is scheduled for a future date.

The State of Wisconsin Crime Laboratory Response Team and Wisconsin Department of Justice Agents and Washburn County Sheriff's Office Personnel processed the crime scene today. The Washburn County Sheriff's Office is maintaining the crime scene at this time, pending the completion of a forensic autopsy scheduled to be conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office in Minnesota.
