In never-say-die style, the Superior Cathedral Panthers scored a touchdown on a perfectly-executed 81-yard pass play with three minutes remaining in the game to defeat the Bessemer Speed Boys 20-19 and be assured of at least a tie for the title in the Michigan-Wisconsin Conference. Quarterback Mark Parenteau fired a 30-yard pass to end Greg Melis, who gathered it in near midfield and outdistanced two defensive backs to score the winning TD. Parenteau earlier hit halfback Greg Amys with TD passes of 3 and 11 yards. Bessemer scored on a 61-yard march with the opening kickoff of the second half, halfback-turned-quarterback Lewis Menara catching a 24-yard pass from quarterback-turned-halfback Jeff Betlewski. Betlewski also figured in one of the other Bessemer TDs, scoring on a 1-yard run, and fullback Mark Borseth drove across the goal line from the four. (1976)
