The Duluth Denfeld Hunters completed a season sweep of the Superior High School boys hockey team with a 4-1 win Tuesday night at the Heritage Center in Duluth. Denfeld also defeated Superior 3-1 on Dec. 22 at Wessman Arena.

The Hunters' win snapped a four-game losing streak and improves them to 11-7-1 overall and 6-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.

The loss is Superior's second straight and drops the Spartans to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in the LSC.

Steven Mikel gave Superior an early 1-0 lead with his second goal of the year 2:19 into the game with assists from brothers Richard and Gerald Mikel.

Denfeld quickly took a 2-1 lead as Keith Tomassoni scored on a power play at 5:56 and Levi Talarico scored 1:05 later.

Denfeld scored the only goal of the second period when Kaspari put home the rebound after a shot by Collin Magnuson and the save by Spartan goaltender Joel Pettingill.

The Hunters also scored the only goal of the third period as Jason Johnson put the puck into an emtpy goal in the final minute of play.

Pettingill finished with 28 saves for Superior and freshman Zach Thompson had 25 for Denfeld.

The Spartans return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when they host Menomonie. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved so as not to conflict with the Great Lakes Pond Hockey Classic.

SPARTAN SPIN: Denfeld won the JV game 3-2 thanks to a goal on a penalty shot with less than five minutes remaining. Taylor Olson scored two power-play goals for the Spartans. Luke Darwin assisted on both goals and Brandon Burd helped out on one. Cody Schimming had 16 saves for Superior, which put 37 shots on Denfeld's goal.
