Wrestling card to benefit youth wrestling
The Heavy on Wrestling organization will hold a professional wrestling card Saturday night at Wessman Arena, with revenues going toward youth wrestling in Superior.
Saturday's card includes AWA legend Baron Von Raschke; WWE Diva Molly Holly; Playboy cover girl, former WWE Diva and current TNA Knockout Christy Hemme; and MTV Star Arik Cannon.
Heavy on Wrestling was created to support a variety of causes in the Midwest area. Between Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa, more than 100 pro wrestlers exist and strive for a place to master their craft, in hopes of becoming a mainstay on millions of TV sets every week.
The goal of Heavy on Wrestling is to bring entertainment to wrestling fans as well as help various groups and organizations that are in need. July 21 marks our first effort and will benefit the area youth amateur wrestling team. The organization's future shows will donate revenue to various organizations as it begins to tour and establish relationships with different youth groups, clubs and schools.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. Saturday with wrestlers signing autographs until the 7 p.m. bell time.
DADS Electronics will have its X-Ploder sound mobile live with a WWE Smackdown video game hooked up for fans to play, and MIX 108 will be broadcasting live until bell time.
Christy Hemme: Hemme won the Diva Search contest on World Wrestling Entertainment programming and quickly became a huge star. She was a 2005 Playboy cover girl and became one of the most popular divas in the wrestling business. She currently is employed by a wrestling company called TNA, which is taped in Universal Studios.
"Wild" Bill Irwin: Bill competed in several major organizations, including WCCW in Texas, AWA in Minneapolis, WCW based out of Atlanta and the WWF based in New York. He tagged with his now deceased brother, Scott, and the two were considered one of the best tag teams of their time. Bill was brought into the WWF as an evil hockey player dubbed "The Goon." WWF decided to bring him back for Wrestlemania a few years ago for a surprise appearance in a battle royal allowing current fans to be introduced to the over the top hockey gimmick.
Molly Holly: Holly broke into TV working for WCW. She then moved on and became a main player in women's wrestling for the WWF/WWE for many years. She has won the WWF/WWE women's championship several times and is considered one of the best female athletes to set foot in a ring. On an interesting note, Holly defeated the Hurricane at Wrestlemania 18 to win the Hardcore Championship. She resides in Wyoming, Minn.
Baron Von Raschke: The Baron is a huge celebrity in the Midwest. Working for Vern Gagne's AWA out of Minneapolis, his opponents grew to fear the dreaded "claw" finishing maneuver that he patented as his own. Von Raschke would grasp his hand over the head of his opponents and squeeze them down until they were no longer capable of competing.
Arik Cannon: Cannon lives out of Minneapolis and recently performed for MTV's Wrestling Society-X program. He is known for his unique reversals that resemble European chain wrestling and offers an interesting and different approach to defeating his opponent. One of the best chain wrestlers in the area, Cannon will help to introduce people to Heavy on Wrestling.
Other appearances include Heavy D (Promoter), Cameron Steele & Mike Rollins (the Dropkick Mafia), Zakk Neo, Superstar Steve Stardom, the Dark Wolf, Josh Calisto, Allison Wonderland, the Main Event Ann Brookstone, Mitch Paradise, J Chaotic, Sammy Savard, Wes Matthews, the Miller Lite Girls and more.
Tickets for Saturday's event are $100 for ringside tables (eight seats) and $15 and $10.
Tickets can be purchased at Goodsports Bar & Grill in Superior and the Piedmont Bottle Shop and Credit Union Service Center (across from Miller Hill Mall's JC Penney parking lot).
