Open since 1982, Vintage Italian Pizza has locations around the Twin Ports in Chester Creek, West Duluth and Superior.

Their menu touts a mix of pizzas, calzones and wraps with prices ranging from $4.95 for Fresh Mozzarella Capresé to $42 for a 20-inch V.I.P. Meat Monster with pepperoni, beef, Canadian bacon, breakfast bacon and spicy Italian sausage — oomph!

Be prepared when you look online because the menu offerings aren’t available at all locations.

On Friday, I was in the market for Silvio’s Philly Formaggio Bistecca Pizza, but that wasn’t available at the Chester location, nearest my home.

When I lobbed three options at my order-taker, he firmly recommended the New Orleans Chicken-Jack.

When I arrived for pickup, delicious smells emanated from the pizzeria. Homey spices, fresh dough, familiar and warming.

Those smells filled my car on the ride home. Safe at my kitchen table, a string of the jalapeño jack and mozzarella combo held fast to the pizza as I removed a single slice.

Large dry herbs sat on top of chicken chunks, shards of mushroom, onion and a fine layer of barbecue sauce.

On the first bite, the saucey zing tasted like sunny days and warmer weather, a little spicy, creamy and substantial.

V.I.P.’s menu discloses that this recipe “was stolen from a neat little place in New Orleans."

Whatever they’re doing, keep it up.
