LOS ANGELES - Uggie the dog, who became a canine star after his memorable role in the Oscar best-picture winner "The Artist," has died. He was 13.

The Jack Russell terrier was euthanized on Friday after battling prostate cancer, his owner, Los Angeles animal trainer Omar Von Muller, announced Wednesday on Facebook. "Our beloved boy has passed away," he wrote in a post.

Uggie was most famous for his role as Jean Dujardin's furry friend in 2011's silent film "The Artist." Berenice Bejo (pictured above with Uggie) also starred in the movie, which nabbed five Academy Awards.
