RESOLUTION #R22-13588 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE OFFICE AND LABORATORY BUILDING EXPANSION OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE, INTRODUCED BY THE DEPARTMENTS OF PARKS, RECREATION, AND FORESTRY AND PLANNING OF THE CITY OF SUPERIOR. Whereas the State of Wisconsin Department of Administration on behalf of the UW-Extension and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve (Reserve) is currently in a Leased Premises with the City of Superior (City) until Dec 31, 2041; and Whereas, the City is a party-of-interest to the Reserve per a Memorandum of Understanding completed on January 29th, 2010, with designated sites that participate in the Reserve; and Whereas, the City has a vital and central relationship with the St. Louis River estuary along its shores, the largest freshwater estuary in the Great Lakes system at the headwaters of Lake Superior; and Whereas, the City recognizes the positive economic, environmental, and social impacts of hosting a Reserve within the City; and Whereas, the City supports the implementation of the Reserve’s management plan through representation on the Reserve’s Advisory Board; and Whereas, the Reserve has identified, through their management plan, a need for increased office space to house its growing staff who conduct research, water quality monitoring, education, outreach, and stewardship along the St. Louis River estuary; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Superior supports a proposal to expand the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve office and laboratory building by 1360 square feet in partnership with the University of Wisconsin- Superior and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, on the leased premises at 14 Marina Drive on Barkers Island.
