Notice of Pending Application for a proposed well expansion at Barkers Island Marina.

Notice of Pending Application for a proposed well expansion at Barkers Island Marina.
Eric Thomas, 250 Marina Dr, Superior, WI, 54880, has applied to the Department of Natural Resources for a permit to allow the widening and lengthening of the existing lift well at Barkers Island Marina. The project is located in the SW of NW of Section 19, Township 49N, Range 13W in Town of Superior, Douglas County.
Barkers Island Marina was created in the 1970's and provides seasonal slip/dock rental, fuel sales, seasonal boat storage as well as a full-service boat repair and maintenance services. The recreational boating industry has grown over the years requiring the addition of expanded infrastructure to accommodate the increase in the size and amenities needed for the current recreational boater. More customers with larger boats have required the need for a larger capacity travel lift for removing boats from the water for maintenance and storage. The current lift well, which is 45' in length is too short to handle the 60'-70' boats that are currently in need of servicing. Barkers Island Marina is requesting a permit to allow the widening and lengthening of the existing lift well.
The existing lift well will be widened by removing the existing interior sheet pile wall and redriving it 3' to the north (wider) of the current location. The length will be extended by moving the two existing end walls out 12'then extending the sides to enclose the dock. The construction will match the existing steel sheet pile structure. This will enable the marina to handle the larger boats that their customers are purchasing. This project is anticipated to start and be completed this fall.
The Department will review the proposal provided by the applicant and any information from public comments and the public informational hearing. The Department will determine whether the proposal complies with ss. 1.11, 30.12, and 30.208, Stats., and ch. NR 150, Wis. Adm. Code, and ensure that the required mitigation meets the standards in s. 281.36(3r), Stats. if the project impacts wetlands.
The Department has made a tentative determination that it will issue the permit for the proposed activity.
