University of Wisconsin-Superior senior goaltender Catherine Johnson made 20 saves and sophomore C.C. Hayes banged home a rebound at 1:11 of the third period for the game winner, as the Yellowjackets blanked St. Scholastica 2-0 Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.
Johnson earned the second shutout of her career, with the help of five saves on four St. Scholastica power plays in the third period. Several of those stops came during a lengthy 5-on-3 midway through the third period.
The Yellowjackets improve to 5-1-1 on the season with their third consecutive win.
Superior’s win also snapped a three-game losing streak to CSS and improved to 10-7-1 all-time against the Saints, including a 7-2 mark on the road.
The Saints got 26 saves from Lexi homeczek.
After two scoreless periods, Hayes scored at 1:11 of the third period on assists from Jenna Curtis and Megan Dulong. That was the extent of the scoring until Kaleigh Martinson scored at 19:43 on an assist from Amber Heidenreich.
UWS hosts St. Catherine in the front end of a home-and-home at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Wessman Arena. Game two of the series is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
The Saints (4-6) are off for a month, playing next against UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 10-11 at Mars Lakeview.
